Bill provides advice to growers and operations on all aspects of tree fruit and grape production. He specializes in tree fruit horticulture and tree fruit nutrient management. He also has certifications of course completion for HACCP I, II, IV and V, CFA/COFFS On-Farm Food Safety Auditor Training and Nutrient Management Planning.
Prior to joining AgraPoint Bill spent 21 years as the province’s tree fruit specialist. During this period he played a key role in the development and implementation of research and development programs including the Northern Spy apple and high-density planting programs. He currently serves as the technical advisor to the NSDA Honeycrisp Orchard renewal Program, conducts and coordinates the Nova Scotia winery acreage certification and is Chairs the Nova Scotia Tree Fruit Research Foundation and .
He has received the Golden Apple and Honorary Membership awards from the NSFGA for outstanding service to the Nova Scotia tree fruit industry. Bill conducts and oversees pesticide evaluation and orchard trials, develops nutrient management plans for tree fruit producers and assists AgraPoint staff on projects. He also does presentations on orchard and vineyard production including site selection, pruning, grafting and fertility. He is the editor of Orchard Outlook and contributes to various publications including: Tree Fruit Orchard management Schedules, Grape Managements Schedule and various tree fruit fact sheets. Bill periodically lectures at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College on the Nova Scotia tree fruit industry and conducts an annual tree fruit-pruning lab as well as coordinating industry orchard tours and field meetings. He is a collaborator on various research projects the most resent being the “Evaluating new Tree fruit Cultivars for the Maritime Climate of Eastern Canada”, “Evaluation of Potential new Apple and Cherry Rootstock” and “Honeycrisp Quality Enhancement”. |
